Robert Moses Collection
Robert Moses served as president of the Long Island State Park Commission, Jones Beach State Parkway Authority, and Bethpage Park Authority concurrently until his resignation, effective January, 1963. His extraordinary vision and public works projects largely transformed and shaped the Long Island region, its infrastructure, and its public spaces into what they are today. The Robert Moses Collection consists of records created and maintained by the Long Island State Park Commission (LISPC), Jones Beach State Parkway Authority (JBSPA), and Bethpage Park Authority (BPA) during the early to mid-20th century. While the records in their entirety span the existence of these organizations from inception to dissolution, the bulk of files date primarily to the decades when the Commission and Authorities were under the direction of Moses. As the LISPC, JBSPA, and BPA shared headquarters and were intricately intertwined, files within this collection often contain a mixture of records created by these entities. This collection contains a wealth of published and unpublished material, including minutes of meetings, correspondence, memoranda, transcripts of public speeches, legal documents, court transcripts, financial ledgers, architectural drawings and blueprints, promotional materials, film reels, and photographs.
Digitization of selected materials from the Robert Moses Collection was undertaken at Long Island University with funding provided by the The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation and the Natural Heritage Trust. The New York State Archives holds copies of the digitized materials and is adding these to its online Digital Collections on an ongoing basis. Researchers interested in digitized materials described in the finding aids below, but not yet available in the online Digital Collections, may request copies by contacting the State Archives Researcher Services Unit at ARCHREF@nysed.gov
