The Attica Uprising and Aftermath Digital Collection
What records are available here?
This is a digital collection of documents relating to investigations and litigation arising from the 1971 Attica prison uprising and its aftermath. These records are stored at the Office of the New York State Attorney General. Most of the documents in this first installment of records being made available on this site pertain to the case of Akil Al-Jundi, on behalf of himself and others similarly situated, Plaintiff vs. The Estate of Nelson A. Rockefeller, Russell Oswald, John Monahan, Vincent Mancusi and Karl Pfeil, Defendants, U.S. District Court, Western District of New York. The Attorney General’s Office has created this digital collection in order to make these documents readily available and accessible to the public.
How were records selected for this collection?
The Attorney General’s Office selected these records from a collection of Attica related litigation files in the custody of the Attorney General’s Office, and it is the intent of the Attorney General to add other litigation and investigative records as they are reviewed, indexed and digitized. The Akil Al-Jundi litigation records provide both a general overview and a detailed account of the events at Attica Correctional facility in September of 1971 and the decades of litigation that followed.
What records are available elsewhere?
The original copies of the records in this digital collection and the litigation files from which they were selected remain in the custody of the Attorney General's Office. The State Archives holds related records created by the Special Commission on Attica ("McKay Commission") in 1971-1972, legal counsel for defendants in the class action lawsuits that followed the uprising, and the Attica Task Force appointed in 2001 to investigate issues raised by the "Forgotten Victims of Attica."
