Local Government Efficiency & Competitiveness, Commission on

The Commission on Local Government Efficiency & Competitiveness was created by Governor Eliot L. Spitzer on April 23, 2007 (Executive Order No. 11). The commission consisted of fifteen members appointed by the Governor, including one member appointed upon recommendation of the State Comptroller, one upon recommendation of the Speaker of the Assembly, one upon recommendation of the Majority Leader of the Senate, one upon recommendation of the Minority Leader of the Assembly, and one upon recommendation of the Minority Leader of the Senate. The New York State Association of Counties, the New York State Association of Towns, and the New York Conference of Mayors and Municipal Officials were each represented by at least one commission member. The commission issued its final report to Governor David A. Paterson in April 2008 and formally ceased operations in March 2009.

The Commission on Local Government Efficiency & Competitiveness was charged with examining the origins, structure, and operations of local government jurisdictions and recommending strategies for reducing the cost and increasing the effectiveness of local government operations, facilitating the merger or consolidation of local government jurisdictions, promoting regional delivery of public services, and reforming the election laws to increase citizen involvement in local government elections.
