Military Patents
Patents are lands/privileges granted to one or more persons by the British crown or the state of New York. Archives series A0447 contains "military" patents that were granted, based on a proclamation of King George III, to officers or soldiers residing in the colony (period 1764-1775).
Series A0447 ALSO contains patents granted by the State of New York following the American Revolution. These lands took the form of “bounty lands” granted to soldiers for war service.
Each state patent shows patentee, date of patent, and land grant location (county, township within the Military Tract, and lot number). At the end is the date the grant was approved.
A searchable index containing names of patentees in the state military patents is available for use. Ask an archivist for assistance.
