GAR Records
The Archives has records of New York State posts of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) (Series B1706). These are organizational records kept by the GAR posts. These records are in 14 categories. Among them are post charters, descriptive books, encampment records, and regimental history surveys.
There is NO name index to allow easy access to relevant information on individuals. Those researching an individual must know the name of the post of which he was a member. Post "rosters" give name and number of the POSTS, not the names of members of a specific post.
Files vary considerably in quantity and detail of information. Records of a particular post are seldom present in all 14 categories. GAR records are not available for interlibrary loan. Many records are extremely fragile or faded, and photocopying is done with approval of Archives staff.
An online finding aid is available to determine which types of records are available for a particular post, and to find box numbers for requesting records to view.
