Tax Assessment Rolls
The Archives has tax assessment rolls of real and personal estates for the period 1799-1804 (Series B0950). Rolls list names of taxable residents, but give only the dollar value of real and personal property, and no information about buildings or moveable property.
These tax rolls cover the whole state EXCEPT for New York County (Manhattan Island). The rolls are arranged by county, then by town. There is no name index. Records are available on self-service microfilm in the research room or through inter-library loan. An online microfilm roll list is available.
Many tax lists from the late 1700s are available in original form only. Researchers must ask Archives staff for assistance. No returns of the US Direct Tax of 1798 survive for New York.
